We attempted to install Windows 98 SE on my computer. The upgrade seemed to work okay, but when I started to "customize" the system, somewhere along the line it refused to restart Windows OR read my CDROM drive (gee. It SAID it would make a copy of the Disc on my PC. Guess it forgot). We had DOS and Safe Mode for a day (Seven's been helping). So for the moment I have access because I uninstalled Windows 98, and it smoothly and efficiently restored my Windows 95. We'll be trying the upgrade again and be more careful with the geek stuff this time I think See you on the other side!

98SE has the reputation of a stable and reliable platform. (Happy memories!) Hope you two get it sorted and enjoy!

Nightly making maps for Seven and dealing with some remaining eBay items, I wanted to be certain some things were out of the way. I'm off tomorrow and all the CCG cards I have offered have ended their auctions, so we'll have a chance to try again. It's not such an anxious prospect now that I know just how to prepare for a smooth transition AND how to restore the current system. Believe me, I'll miss Win95b a great deal. I'm only upgrading because I have to.

I tried 2 more times to install Win98 and reverted each time. On Monday night I spent 4 hours with a Microsoft Tech on the phone, and by the end of the call we were finally getting somewhere with the installation.
(something about devices and drivers - most of you probably wouldnt understand)
The biggest culprits were my network card which connects me to the Internet - it needed a Win98 specific driver and that's what was preventing me from booting into Windows. And the motherboard, for which I have no new drivers.
The mofo board is currently in something called DOS-compatbity mode, which alows me to boot up within a reasonable amount of time. But it doesn't see my main CDROM drive, doesnt let the computer automatically restart (it hangs on the wait screen), and my animated cursors for my desktop theme won't animate.
Hmmm I guess I know what comes next.
