The Nacene is the name of the Caretaker and Suspiria's race, by the way.
We saw them as amorphous blobs albeit capable of changing their shape at will.
But, apparently they are capable of matter manipulation on a huge scale, including building massive arrays and devastating eco-systems.
When the original exploratory party had accidentally decimated Ocampa these two were charged with caring for the race whilst 'repairing' the planet. But Suspiria didn't seem to like the idea, because she upped and left to do her own thing, leaving her mate to carry on with the housework.
It seems like a good kind thing to do, care for a race you have hurt like that, but maybe he was killing them by overkindness. Their mental abilities were atrophying and their lifespan rather short. After 500 generations (call it 250 earth years) some youngsters were starting to get curious about outside, just like Kes.
Meanwhile, the Ocampa with Suspiria were well developed mentally and lived twice as long. Why?
