***Spoilers below (for some of you answering the 'Where are you up to?' thread...)
So - 7.12 and 7.13 have finally arrived and I can get to see what all the fuss was about.
I sat down with a mix of feelings: joy that I'll finally be able to discuss Endgame with everybody and sadness/disbelief that it could all come to an end.
7.12 - Homestead was a good ep, directed by Geordi and gritty without being too harsh. I expected Neelix's departure to be a little sentimental but I found myself damp-eyed at the end. Surprising because he was always my least favourite character. It was a tribute to the direction, not too heavy, just right. It was followed by Renaissance Man which seemed to me to be totally pointless. No story, no suspense, no belief. It was as if the cast and crew were filling in time preparing for Endgame. I'm sorry to say that it was the worst episode from the entire series. I mean, why would the Doctor do that? Why didn't he try to get a secret message to the crew? Shame.
7.13 - Endgame. What can I say before I've seen it at least three more times? I liked the direction of the first part with the mix of eras. I wasn't totally convinced by Admiral Janeway, I expected her to display more bitterness. I loved the San Francisco scenes and really wish that 'Voyager II' would be Admiral Janeway flying a desk in Starfleet HQ. The second half troubled me for two reasons: I wasn't very comfortable with the Admiral and the Captain occupying the same space for so long. I don't know why but it just didn't seem right in a temporal mechanics type of way. Also, there was a feeling that some vital bits ended up on the cutting room floor, like the planning for the "endgame" between the two Janeways and what happened to Voyager and the sphere at the end? The sphere swallowed Voyager which then fired a torpedo and escaped from the wreckage without a scratch? Maybe I missed something and I'll have to see it again. I'm sure the sphere had orders to kill Janeway so why did they swallow Voyager?
And now it's finished. In hindsight it was the best of the series'. It may not have had quite the charm of TNG but it told a much better story and much more consistently. It was more 'human'. It had much better story arcs too, whatever they used to say on the other board. I know this because now I watch the full set on a Saturday night and while it doesn't matter where you are in TNG or DS9 it does with Voyager (they seem to play the episodes at random for some unfathomable reason). It matters whether Kes or Seven are on the show. It matters whether Nelix has conquered his jealousy. It matters whether Tom is with B'Elana.
Roll on the DVD version and lets hope that by the time they get to Voyager they start to put on some extra stuff on the disks!
